Joan Hancock is mainly self taught after a few art courses as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. During the ’80’s she opened Blue Skies Studio in Palo Alto that sold folk arts and crafts from around the world.
Later she operated a wall mural business through the San Francisco decorator showrooms, painting murals in numerous waiting rooms, lobbies, children’s rooms, kitchens and bathrooms…but never made it to a living room.
She likes to work on groups of paintings illustrating a theme and has shown in several local galleries. Some past show themes have been:
“Maximillian and Carlotta”
“The Adventures of Leland and Jane”
“New Birds in the Pruneyard”
”Circus in the Orchard”
Today she paints three subjects: Portraits, Landscapes, and Fantasy Landscapes. The narrative portraits are in a Modern Folk Art style. The landscapes are from local scenes and the fantasy landscapes allow for more play with color and texture. All work is in acrylic paint on gessoed board.
