Sandra
Cochran is a native Californian. She received her Bachelor
of Arts degree from San Francisco's New College of California
and went on to do post-graduate work in fine art at the Academy
of Art College in San Francisco.
Sandra searches for the essence of a painting - more suggestive
than explicit. She will paint a canvas, wipe it off, and then
paint it again - over and over until that feeling she is trying
to express makes itself visible. For her, painting is a love
and a compulsion. It is also a process. The act of concentration
on repetitive painting of a single subject creates a state
of creation - she calls the "whur" - where a canvas
transforms
itself from being an image to being art.
While all art is subjective and what speaks to one person
may go unknown and unnoticed by another, the artist must
have something to say and then do it in such a way that
it is more felt than seen. Showing a touch of irony, she
says that her paintings are sometimes better seen through
closed eyes.
