Painting With Light - Landscape and Nature Photography
Painters will tell you that capturing the quality of light - the way it reflects off wet leaves, the way light glows on the water in early dawn - is one of their biggest challenges. With photography, I find it is the quality of light that makes the picture - more than the composition or the color. Without a special quality of light, the photography is just a weak representation of reality.
From the moment I watched my print developing in the chemical "soup" in the basement darkroom my grandfather built for me to my current examination of the histograms on the back of my DSLR, I think of photography in this way, as a kind of painting with light. My favorite moments in photography are when I look through the lens and see it - a quality of light.
