Jewelry
Working
in precious metials has intrigued Edith Sommer for over 40 years.
She is largely self-taught but has studied wtih many famous
jewelers including Bob Ebendorf, Ellen Broker from Denmark and
Charles LaLoma. Studies have also included workshops at the
Haystack Craft School and San Jose State. Edith continues to
take workshops around the country.
She now teaches classes in jewelry-making for the Palo Alto
Cultural Center. She has taught for Foothill College, the Palo
Alto Adult School and the City of San Mateo. In her Palo Alto
studio she produces one-of-a-kind pieces for galleries and on
commission.
While precious and semiprecious stones are often incorporated
in her work, they are secondary to the design of metal.
She strives to bring new dimensions to the uses of silver, gold
and copper with unusual patterns and manipulations from ancient
and modern technologies. She likes making small boxes and unusual
serving spoons as well as wearable art, and is exploring bi-metals
and etching to produce not only new pieces but to privode new
knowledge for her students.
Design inspiration also comes from the limitations of the metals
and from the simulation of natural forms and ethnic patterns
found on her many trips abroad.
