Ceramics
Eric Steppling has been a ceramic artist for 13 years and specializes in Raku Vases. He lives in Palo Alto, and has exhibited his work throughout California.
Raku originated in Japan in the 16th century, where raku vessels were and still are used in the traditional tea ceremony. It is a low-fire technique, where bisqued work is quickly heated to red hot temperature and then taken out of the kiln and reduced in wood shavings, newspaper or a similar combustible material.
Each hand thrown piece is different based on the form and the reduction process, which brings out iridescent colors or intricate lines in clear glazes.
"My joy is throwing forms that bring modern elements to classical shapes. I prefer the Raku technique because its process cannot be fully controlled, and the final work is never determined until the piece has cooled.
The appearance discovered; a product of artistic control and good karma." |
